Omaha police were injured during a shootout with a suspect at a QuikTrip gas station after an earlier shooting.
A violent and unsettling chain of events unfolded in South Omaha on Wednesday afternoon, leaving three police officers injured and a shooting suspect dead.
The incident began shortly after noon at Phil’s Foodway, a neighborhood grocery store, where a 61-year-old man was shot multiple times in the chest. Witnesses reported sudden chaos as gunfire erupted inside the store,
sending customers and employees scrambling for safety. Omaha police officers responded quickly to emergency calls,
arriving to find the victim suffering from serious injuries. Despite the severity of the wounds, authorities later confirmed that the man’s injuries were non-life-threatening, thanks in part to the rapid medical response. Investigators identified the suspect as a man in his late 20s, who fled the scene immediately after the shooting, prompting a citywide search and an urgent police response.
Using information gathered at the grocery store and real-time coordination between units, police were able to track the suspect’s vehicle within a short period of time. The pursuit led officers to a QuikTrip gas station near the intersection of 32nd and L Streets, a busy area with frequent customer traffic. As officers attempted to make contact, the suspect exited his vehicle and ran into the gas station, creating an immediate danger to both law enforcement and civilians inside. Surveillance footage and witness accounts later confirmed that several customers were present at the time, heightening the urgency of the situation. Officers quickly secured the area and evacuated as many people as possible while attempting to contain the suspect and prevent further harm.
City and state leaders responded publicly in the hours following the incident. Omaha Mayor John Ewing Jr. praised the officers for their courage and quick decision-making under extreme pressure, noting that their actions likely prevented additional injuries or loss of life. Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen echoed those sentiments, thanking law enforcement for their service and expressing support for the injured officers and their families. The shooting caused significant disruptions in the surrounding area, with nearby streets closed for several hours as investigators processed the scene. Traffic was rerouted, and residents were urged to avoid the area until authorities declared it safe.
QuikTrip officials also issued a statement following the incident, reaffirming their commitment to employee and customer safety and expressing gratitude that no customers or staff members were seriously hurt. The gas station temporarily closed as part of the investigation but later reopened once authorities cleared the scene. Community members expressed shock and concern over the violence, while also acknowledging the swift police response that prevented a broader tragedy. As the investigation continues, officials are working to piece together the suspect’s motive and movements leading up to the shootings. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers faced by both law enforcement officers and civilians, and it has reignited conversations in the community about public safety, crime prevention, and emergency preparedness.
