Charlie Kirk’s Final Words Before Fatal Shooting in Utah
Orem, Utah — Political activist Charlie Kirk, 31, was fatally shot during a debate event at Utah Valley University (UVU) on Wednesday afternoon, moments after responding to a question about gun violence in America.
Witnesses say Kirk was hosting a Q&A for Turning Point USA, the nonprofit he founded at 18, when a single shot struck him in the neck.
Video circulating online shows him sitting beneath a tent marked “The American Comeback” as a gunshot rang out. Just seconds earlier, an audience member had asked about mass shootings. Kirk began to answer — “Counting or not counting gang violence—” — before collapsing mid-sentence.
Blood was visible as attendees screamed and fled. Witnesses described chaos as students ducked for cover and scrambled toward exits.
Confusion and Custody
Police quickly detained an elderly man seen shouting about his rights as he was handcuffed, but later clarified he was not the suspect. Authorities now say the fatal shot is believed to have been fired from the Losee Center building, about 200 yards away, and a manhunt is underway.
“We expected security checks today, but there were none,” said attendee Tyler McGettigan. “It felt like anyone could just walk in.”
vowing that those responsible would be “fully accountable.”
Former President Donald Trump, a longtime ally of Kirk, confirmed the activist’s death in a post on Truth Social:
“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. He loved America’s youth more than anyone. Melania and I send our sympathies to Erika and the family. Charlie, we love you.”
California Gov. Gavin Newsom also weighed in, calling the shooting “disgusting, vile, and reprehensible” while urging all Americans to reject political violence.
