{"id":833,"date":"2025-01-28T12:37:20","date_gmt":"2025-01-28T12:37:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/originaltastex.com\/?p=833"},"modified":"2025-01-28T12:37:20","modified_gmt":"2025-01-28T12:37:20","slug":"mexicos-president-reacts-to-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/originaltastex.com\/?p=833","title":{"rendered":"Mexico\u2019s President Reacts to Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico\u2019s president, has responded to\u00a0Donald Trump\u2019s proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America\u00a0with a counter-proposal to rename North America.<\/p>\n<div class=\"g g-3\">\n<div class=\"g-single a-23\">\n<div id=\"M837594ScriptRootC1374974_156ff\">\n<div id=\"AdskeeperComposite1374974_156ff\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Standing before a global map in her daily press briefing, Sheinbaum proposed dryly that the continent should be known as \u201cAm\u00e9rica Mexicana\u201d, or \u201cMexican America\u201d, because an 1814 founding document that preceded Mexico\u2019s constitution referred to it that way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds nice, no?\u201d she added with a sarcastic tone. She also noted that the ocean basin bounded by the US Gulf coast, Mexico\u2019s eastern states and the island of Cuba has been known as the Gulf of Mexico since 1607.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, who will be sworn in for a second term on 20 January, said on Tuesday he planned to rename the Gulf as \u201cthe Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"5ff05834-4d54-45b9-97af-37ef68376995\" class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/46a072d227b69ff9a4c93d4b06d8957484edbed7\/0_0_1920_1080\/1920.jpg?width=465&amp;dpr=1&amp;s=none&amp;crop=none\" alt=\"'Why don't we call it Mexican America?': Claudia Sheinbaum hits back at Trump \u2013 video\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s appropriate. And Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He also claimed that the US\u2019s southern neighbour was run by drug cartels, to which Sheinbaum gave a terse response: \u201cIn Mexico, the people rule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The exchange has started to answer a larger question lingering over the bilateral relationship between the two regional powers:\u00a0how would newly elected Sheinbaum handle Trump\u2019s strong-handed diplomatic approach, as well as promises of mass deportations and devastating taxes on trading partners like Mexico?<\/p>\n<p>Sheinbaum\u2019s predecessor and political mentor Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador (Amlo) \u2013 who hailed from a similar strain of class populism as Trump, even though he leaned left \u2013 was able to build a relationship with Trump as an ally, and\u00a0his government began to block people from migrating north under US pressure, a boon to Trump.<\/p>\n<p>But it was unclear whether Mexico\u2019s first female president, a scientist and leftist lacking the folksy populism that rocketed L\u00f3pez Obrador into power, would be able to build the same relationship.<\/p>\n<p>While Wednesday\u2019s joke quickly ricocheted across social media feeds, it also set the tone for what a Sheinbaum-Trump relationship could look like in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHumor can be a good tactic. It projects strength, which is what Trump responds to. It was probably the right choice on this issue,\u201d said Brian Winter, vice-president of the New York-based Council of the\u00a0Americas. \u201cAlthough, President Sheinbaum knows it won\u2019t work on everything \u2013 Trump and his administration will demand serious engagement from Mexico on the big issues of immigration, drugs and trade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sheinbaum\u2019s remarks come after other stern but collaborative responses regarding Trump\u2019s proposals.<\/p>\n<p>On Trump\u2019s pitch to slap 25% tariffs on Mexican imports, Sheinbaum warned that if the new US administration imposes tariffs on Mexico,\u00a0her administration will respond with similar measures.
