When Zohran Mamdani<\/strong> stood before cheering supporters on election night to claim victory in New York City\u2019s mayoral race, he promised to bring \u201ca new era of honesty, fairness, and transparency\u201d to City Hall.<\/p>\n

Just two weeks later, that promise is under intense scrutiny.<\/p>\n

A Washington-based campaign finance watchdog has filed two criminal referrals<\/strong> against Mamdani \u2014 one to the Department of Justice\u2019s Criminal Division<\/strong>, and another to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg\u2019s office<\/strong> \u2014 accusing the 34-year-old democratic socialist of accepting unlawful foreign campaign donations<\/strong> during his historic run for mayor.<\/p>\n

The allegations, if proven, could represent one of the most significant violations of campaign finance law in New York City\u2019s modern political history \u2014 and an early test of credibility for a leader who campaigned on cleaning up government.<\/p>\n

The Watchdog Steps In<\/h3>\n

The complaints were filed by the Coolidge Reagan Foundation<\/strong>, a conservative nonprofit known for targeting what it calls \u201csystemic corruption in campaign finance.\u201d The foundation has previously filed complaints against Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/strong>, Hillary Clinton\u2019s 2016 presidential campaign<\/strong>, and the Democratic National Committee<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In its latest action, the group claims that Mamdani\u2019s campaign \u201cknowingly and repeatedly accepted\u201d contributions from individuals living outside the United States \u2014 a potential violation of both the Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA)<\/strong> and New York Election Code<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are not isolated incidents or clerical errors,\u201d said Dan Backer<\/strong>, a veteran campaign finance attorney and president of the Coolidge Reagan Foundation, in a statement provided to reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was a sustained pattern of foreign money flowing into a New York City mayoral race \u2014 a clear violation of federal law and New York City\u2019s campaign finance rules. Mamdani\u2019s campaign was on notice for months that it was accepting illegal foreign contributions, and yet it did nothing meaningful to stop it.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the Foundation, the complaint is based in part on data first uncovered by The New York Post<\/strong> earlier this month, which revealed that Mamdani\u2019s campaign received approximately $13,000 in contributions<\/strong> from at least 170 donors residing overseas<\/strong> \u2014 including one from his own mother-in-law in Dubai<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Legal Stakes<\/h3>\n

Federal law is unambiguous: it is illegal for foreign nationals to donate money to American political campaigns<\/strong>, whether at the federal, state, or local level.<\/p>\n

The Federal Election Campaign Act<\/strong> explicitly prohibits any person from \u201csoliciting, accepting, or receiving\u201d contributions from individuals who are not U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents. Violations can carry severe penalties<\/strong>, including hefty fines and potential prison sentences for knowing or willful violations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe law is crystal clear,\u201d Backer said. \u201cForeign nationals may not participate in American elections, and that includes making contributions. Yet Mamdani\u2019s campaign repeatedly accepted donations from individuals abroad \u2014 some even tied to regions and individuals openly sympathetic to hostile actors.
