near the Shumagin Islands off the Alaska Peninsula.<\/p>\n

Sirens and phone alerts urged residents from Homer to Unalaska to evacuate immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a lot of bumper-to-bumper traffic,\u201d said\u00a0Homer Mayor Rachel Lord<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

2. Tsunami Warning Issued<\/strong><\/p>\n

A\u00a0tsunami was confirmed<\/strong>, according to\u00a0David Snider<\/strong>\u00a0of the NOAA, though it caused only minor waves of about three inches.<\/p>\n

\u201cA tsunami was generated by this event, but no longer poses a threat,\u201d the\u00a0Tsunami Warning Center<\/strong>\u00a0stated.<\/p>\n

3. Emergency Response<\/strong><\/p>\n

Shelters opened at\u00a0Kodiak High School<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0North Star Elementary<\/strong>\u00a0as panic spread.<\/p>\n

One resident in Seward said nervously, \u201cJust pray we don\u2019t get waved.\u201d<\/p>\n

4. Aftershocks and Context<\/strong><\/p>\n

Over\u00a020 aftershocks<\/strong>\u00a0followed, the strongest at\u00a0magnitude 5.2<\/strong>. Seismologist\u00a0Michael West<\/strong>\u00a0said,<\/p>\n

\u201cThe entire southern coast of Alaska is a gigantic earthquake zone\u2026 Early signs suggest we\u2019re on the lucky side today.\u201d<\/p>\n
