His quick wit was matched only by his heart for helping others. Now, family, friends, and colleagues are mourning the loss of\u00a0<strong>Officer Hunter Simoncic<\/strong>, a 26-year-old Kansas City, Kansas police officer killed in the line of duty.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Promising Life Cut Short<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Simoncic died in the early hours of\u00a0<strong>August 26<\/strong>. He was struck by a suspect fleeing police in a stolen vehicle. Authorities say the driver,\u00a0<strong>Dennis Edward Mitchell III, 31<\/strong>, allegedly swerved into Simoncic as he deployed stop sticks to stop the chase.<\/p>\n<p>Simoncic was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. Mitchell now faces charges including\u00a0<strong>capital murder<\/strong>, fleeing or attempting to elude police, criminal possession of a weapon by a felon, and two counts of theft.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8302\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nba-daily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Officer-Hunter-Simoncic-police-car.jpg?fit=901%2C600&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>\u201cThis was an intentional act of homicide on a police officer,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0KCK Police Chief\u00a0<strong>Karl Oakman<\/strong>\u00a0said in a somber press conference.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Legacy of Service and Kindness<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Long before his police badge, Simoncic was known as a leader among friends. At\u00a0<strong>Pittsburg State University<\/strong>, he raised money for the Special Olympics, dyed his hair bleach blonde for homecoming, and even taught classmates to line dance.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHe was always thinking about other people,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0said\u00a0<strong>Steve Chastain<\/strong>, his fraternity chapter advisor.\u00a0<em>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t about accolades. It was about what his efforts could do for others.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After college, Simoncic earned a master\u2019s degree at Oklahoma State University. He also served as a supervisor at the Southeast Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center before becoming an officer.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8303\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nba-daily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Officer-Hunter-Simoncic-City-Kansas-Police-Department.jpg?fit=978%2C550&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>But even as he patrolled overnight shifts, his service didn\u2019t stop there. Simoncic volunteered with\u00a0<strong>Lead to Read KC<\/strong>, mentoring elementary students in literacy. He often shared how he once struggled with stuttering, hoping to inspire children to overcome their own challenges.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThat speaks volumes to his character, commitment, and passion for the community,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0said\u00a0<strong>Amirah Pughsley<\/strong>, principal of Banneker Elementary.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Community Shattered<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Friends said the tragedy still doesn\u2019t feel real. Some had spoken to Simoncic just days earlier, planning a hunting trip.<\/p>\n<p>One fraternity brother described texting him after hearing a KCK officer was hurt. He was desperate for reassurance it wasn\u2019t his friend, only to discover the worst.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8311\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nba-daily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Officer-Hunter-Simoncic-2.jpg?fit=889%2C500&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>\u201cHe loved his mom so much\u2026 they were inseparable,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Chastain added, noting how devastating the loss has been for Simoncic\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds gathered Thursday night for a\u00a0<strong>candlelight vigil<\/strong>\u00a0in downtown Kansas City, Kansas. They shared stories about the young officer who left such a mark on everyone he met.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Honoring a Fallen Officer<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A public funeral service for Simoncic will be held at\u00a0<strong>Children\u2019s Mercy Park<\/strong>\u00a0on September 3. A law enforcement processional will follow the service.
