But on Monday, Disney announced Kimmel would be back on air. The Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC, said in a statement on September 22:<\/p>\n

\u201dLast Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.\u201d<\/p>\n

Isn\u2019t playing along<\/h2>\n

But the comeback isn\u2019t going as planned.<\/p>\n

Sinclair Inc., the company that operates local ABC affiliates, isn\u2019t playing along. Known for its conservative stance, the company has faced criticism for making programming decisions that appear to push a conservative political agenda.<\/p>\n

Now, they announced they will\u00a0preempt<\/em>\u00a0Kimmel\u2019s show in nearly 40 major TV markets, replacing it with local news programming instead.<\/p>\n

\u201dBeginning Tuesday night, Sinclair will be preempting Jimmy Kimmel Live! across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming. Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show\u2019s potential return,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n

Three demands<\/h2>\n

A preemption is when affiliate owners replace national programming with their own content. Sinclair made it clear that Kimmel\u2019s show won\u2019t return to their air until several conditions are met.<\/p>\n

The company stated they want \u201cformal discussions\u2026 with ABC regarding the network\u2019s commitment to professionalism and accountability.\u201d They also called on Kimmel to \u201cissue a direct apology to the Kirk family\u201d and make a \u201cmeaningful personal donation\u201d to the Kirk family and Turning Point USA.<\/p>\n

\u201dRegardless of ABC\u2019s plans for the future of the program, Sinclair intends not to return Jimmy Kimmel Live! to our air until we are confident that appropriate steps have been taken to uphold the standards expected of a national broadcast platform,\u201d the company added.<\/p>\n
