Witnesses say Kirk was hosting a Q&A for\u00a0Turning Point USA<\/strong>, the nonprofit he founded at 18, when a single shot struck him in the neck.<\/p>\n

Video circulating online shows him sitting beneath a tent marked\u00a0\u201cThe American Comeback\u201d<\/em>\u00a0as a gunshot rang out. Just seconds earlier, an audience member had asked about mass shootings. Kirk began to answer \u2014\u00a0\u201cCounting or not counting gang violence\u2014\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 before collapsing mid-sentence.<\/p>\n

Confusion and Custody<\/h2>\n

Police quickly detained an elderly man seen shouting about his rights as he was handcuffed, but later clarified he was\u00a0not the suspect<\/strong>. Authorities now say the fatal shot is believed to have been fired from the\u00a0Losee Center building<\/strong>, about 200 yards away, and a\u00a0manhunt is underway<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
