The public funeral procession<\/strong> took place on Tuesday, July 30<\/strong>, along Broad Street<\/strong>, one of the city\u2019s most well-known areas. Fans lined the route early in the day to pay tribute to the legendary Black Sabbath<\/strong> frontman.<\/p>\n

The hearse<\/strong> carrying Ozzy\u2019s body traveled slowly through the crowd, followed by members of his family<\/strong>. The band Bostin\u2019 Brass<\/strong> played live music as the procession moved forward, blending somber melodies with upbeat moments that reflected Ozzy\u2019s larger-than-life personality.<\/p>\n

Bench becomes a memorial<\/h2>\n

The cortege ended at the Black Sabbath Bench<\/strong>near the Black Sabbath Bridge<\/strong>, a location already filled with flowers, candles, and notes left by fans in the days following his death.<\/p>\n

That spot has become an unofficial memorial site. People from across the UK and other countries have visited to leave personal messages, photos, and mementos. A livestream<\/strong> of the bench continues online for those who can\u2019t be there in person.<\/p>\n

Earlier private service<\/h2>\n

Before the public event, Ozzy\u2019s family held a private funeral<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

While those details have not been made public, the family made it clear they wanted fans to have their own moment to say goodbye.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know how much this moment will mean to his fans,\u201d said Zafar Iqbal<\/strong>, Birmingham\u2019s Lord Mayor<\/strong>, who also helped organize the event. \u201cWe\u2019re proud to host it here with his loving family in the place where it all began.\u201d<\/p>\n

The public procession was planned quickly but with care. Birmingham City Council<\/strong> worked alongside the Osbourne family<\/strong>, who funded the event, and agencies like West Midlands Police<\/strong> and West Midlands Metro<\/strong> to make sure it went smoothly.<\/p>\n

A hometown icon<\/h2>\n

Ozzy was born in Birmingham<\/strong>, and the city often played a role in his life and music. In June<\/strong>, just weeks before his death, he and the original members of Black Sabbath<\/strong> received the Freedom of the City<\/strong>, the highest honor Birmingham can give.<\/p>\n

Ozzy also performed at the Back to the Beginning<\/strong>concert at Villa Park<\/strong> earlier in July. That show, his final appearance, drew over 40,000<\/strong> in person and millions more online.<\/p>\n

A life in music<\/h2>\n

Ozzy Osbourne<\/strong> helped form Black Sabbath<\/strong> in 1968<\/strong>. The band is widely seen as one of the creators of heavy metal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Ozzy\u2019s unique voice and unpredictable stage presence made him one of the most recognizable figures in rock history. The band sold more than 75 million albums<\/strong> and influenced generations of musicians.<\/p>\n

He also had a successful solo career. His song \u201cI Don\u2019t Want to Change the World\u201d<\/strong> won a Grammy<\/strong>in 1993<\/strong>. In total, he won multiple Grammys and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame<\/strong> twice, once with Black Sabbath in 2006<\/strong> and again as a solo artist in 2024<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Not just music<\/h2>\n

In the 2000s, Ozzy and his family became global TV personalities with their hit reality series \u201cThe Osbournes\u201d<\/strong>, which aired on MTV<\/strong> and won a Primetime Emmy<\/strong> in 2002<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Ozzy and his wife Sharon Osbourne<\/strong> also created Ozzfest<\/strong>, a traveling metal festival that helped boost the careers of many newer artists.<\/p>\n

The first full version of Ozzfest launched in 1997<\/strong>, with acts like Marilyn Manson<\/strong> and Pantera<\/strong> on the bill.<\/p>\n

Humor to the end<\/h2>\n

Despite his healthincluding Parkinson\u2019s disease<\/strong>, a spinal injury<\/strong>, and past substance abuse<\/strong>, Ozzy often spoke with humor about life and death.<\/p>\n

In a 2011 interview<\/strong> with The Times of London<\/em>, Ozzy said he didn\u2019t care what music was played at his funeral. \u201cThey can put on a medley of Justin Bieber<\/strong>, Susan Boyle<\/strong>, and \u2018We Are the Diddymen\u2019<\/strong> if it makes \u2019em happy,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I do want to make sure it\u2019s a celebration, not a mope-fest.\u201d<\/p>\n
