Donald Trump \u2018completely obliterated\u2019 Iran\u2019s top secret Fordow nuclear site with 12 massive 30,000-pound \u2018bunker buster\u2019 bombs.<\/p>\n
Two other nuclear sites in Iran were also \u2018wiped out\u2019 with 30 Tomahawk missiles launched from U.S. submarines 400 miles away.<\/p>\n
The details were first revealed by Sean Hannity of Fox News, who spoke to the president shortly after the strikes.<\/p>\n
Hannity added that he had been told by Trump officials that Fordow was \u2018gone.\u2019<\/p>\n
The extent of the devastating bombing mission was later confirmed by a U.S. military official who suggested Fordow had been \u2018taken off the table.\u2019<\/p>\n
It had previously been suggested that only two bunker busters would be needed to destroy the site.<\/p>\n
A dozen B-2 stealth bombers were used to deliver the bunker busters.
\nIsrael had said their offensive already crippled Iran\u2019s air defenses, allowing them to degrade multiple Iranian nuclear sites.<\/p>\n
But to destroy the Fordow nuclear fuel enrichment plant, Israel appealed to Trump for the bunker busting American bomb known as the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP).<\/p>\n
The device uses its weight and kinetic force to reach deeply buried targets and then explode.<\/p>\n
It has to be delivered by the B-2 stealth bomber, which is only found in the American arsenal.<\/p>\n
The deployment of the bomb was the first time it has ever been used in combat.<\/p>\n
It is precision-guided and designed to attack deeply buried and hardened bunkers and tunnels, according to the U.S. Air Force.<\/p>\n
Military experts say it can penetrate about 200 feet below the surface before going off.<\/p>\n
The bombs can be dropped one after another, effectively drilling deeper and deeper into the ground with each successive blast.<\/p>\n
On Saturday morning the B-2 stealth bombers left from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri and flew non-stop for about 37 hours, refueling several times.<\/p>\n
The B-2, which is capable of carrying nuclear warheads, is only flown by the Air Force, and is produced by Northrop Grumman.
\nIt first saw action in 1999 in the Kosovo War, and is rarely used by the U.S. military in combat as each aircraft is worth around $1 billion.<\/p>\n
