    Mackenzie Shirilla\u00a0talks about her life behind bars in a newly obtained jail call with her mother, Natalie Shirilla, including fears that she won\u2019t \u201cbe able to have kids\u201d if she\u2019s eventually released from prison.<\/p>\n

    In the undated call obtained by PEOPLE, Mackenzie discusses the realities of life behind bars in the\u00a0Cuyahoga County Jail following her\u00a0double-murder conviction\u00a0and says she \u201cdoesn\u2019t want to live here with these people,\u201d referencing being surrounded by what her mother described as \u201cmurderers [and] kidnappers.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cBut anyway, since you have to spend time there, we all knew you were going to anyway, it doesn\u2019t sound so, so bad,\u201d her mother says.<\/p>\n

    Later in the conversation, Mackenzie tells her mother she hopes her parents don\u2019t have to sell their house, and then she opens up about her fears for the future.<\/p>\n

    \u201cI feel like I want to live off the grid, like, and I\u2019m just \u2014 I\u2019m just I\u2019m thinking about like how I\u2019m just gonna be like old when I get out of jail and like, I don\u2019t know, like I\u2019m not gonna be able to have kids or like a family and sh\u2013 like that,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

    Her mother later responds, \u201cDon\u2019t go there,\u201d to which Mackenzie says, \u201cI know, it\u2019s hard not to.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Renewed attention has been placed on Shirilla\u2019s case following the Friday, May 15, release of the Netflix documentary\u00a0The Crash<\/em>.<\/p>\n

    Mackenzie, now 21, is currently serving two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life in prison after being convicted of murder, vehicular homicide and other charges connected to the July 2022 deaths of her 20-year-old boyfriend,\u00a0Dominic Russo, and the couple\u2019s friend, 19-year-old\u00a0Davion Flanagan.<\/p>\n

    Prosecutors argued during Mackenzie\u2019s 2023 bench trial that she intentionally crashed her sedan into a brick wall in Strongsville, Ohio, at nearly 100 mph after her relationship with Russo had become strained. Although she was 17 at the time, she was tried as an adult. The judge in her case described her in court as \u201cliteral hell on wheels.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Mackenzie and her family have always maintained she suffered a medical episode and that the crash was an accident. She will become eligible for parole in 2037.<\/p>\n
